"The Tao of Self Cultivation": A study in the Tao Te Ching Taoist philosophy is ancient Chinese wisdom with roots dating beyond 4000 years to the I-Ching (The Book of Changes) and is based in the yin/yang principle of existence. Taoism is the foundation of chi gung (qi gong), Tai Chi Chuan (taijiquan) and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the spark that gave birth to Chan Buddhism, which later became Zen in Japan. Taoism deals with universal truths: the reality of things, how the world functions and human nature. It presents these truths in simple, self-evident terms making no theological projections or moral judgments. Tao simply means "Way," in the form of action or method, and not "God," a person or being. It is a way to live, using universal principles as a guide to deal appropriately with oneself, others and the world. The Tao follows natural principles and therefore taps into universal energy, which is the "true self" or spirit. To ignore this universal reality is to be disconnected from one's self and to become weak and suffer. Cultivating the Shen (spirit) is to cultivate consciousness, our true nature. Study Session This four-class intensive session examines the most important aphorisms in the Tao Te Ching (Dao De Jing) relating to Self Cultivation. It focuses on establishing a fundamental understanding of Taoist principles. This session is highly recommended for beginning or advanced students of Tai Chi ch'uan, Taoist meditation, or anyone interested in developing their internal energy and consciousness. Classes are open to all interested—offered periodically and scheduled dependent upon student sign-up. Classes are held at the Mr. Terry Li is a senior certified lineage teacher of the Cheng Man-ch'ing (Zheng Manqing) tradition of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan. For over thirty years, he has studied meditation, philosophy, Chinese culture and Traditional Chinese Medicine with great teachers. He brings a contemporary perspective to ancient metaphysical wisdom as it applies to daily life.
The intensive study sessions cover various topics: Taoist philosophy, meditation, the Tai Chi Classics or the art of Tai Chi Chuan. Held once a week over consecutive weeks, these sessions are offered periodically. Registration is required. |
